The five-point diagnostic

When a code bounces, resist the urge to declare it dead and move on. Run these five checks in order — they catch the cause faster than random retries:

1. Minimum spend. Many codes only unlock over a set cart total. If you’re a few dollars short, the box simply refuses. Add the part you were going to buy anyway and try again.
2. Excluded items. A lot of codes apply to full-price parts only and skip clearance, open-box and remanufactured stock. If a discounted item is in the cart, the code may be reacting to that.
3. Category limit. Some codes are tied to a category — brakes, suspension, steering. A brakes code won’t touch a control arm. Check the card’s note for the category it covers.
4. Expired or capped. Codes expire and some have a redemption limit. Check the confirmed-time stamp on the card; if it’s old, the code may simply have ended.
5. Copy-paste slip. A stray space or the wrong case sneaks in constantly. Re-type the code by hand if a paste keeps failing.

The fastest single fix

If you only do one thing, re-copy the code cleanly and confirm your cart is full price and over the minimum. That combination clears the large majority of failures on its own. The remaining cases are almost always a category mismatch or an expired offer — both of which the card’s notes will tell you at a glance.

When the code really is dead

Sometimes a code genuinely has ended, and that’s fine — it’s why we timestamp every card and pull dead ones the same day.
